Help Us and Support Us
Help Us
Shree Mahakaruna Sakyapa monastic School has the aim to take complete care of the monks, including living and studying needs. Our school offers a full education following the government curriculum (mathematics, science, English, Nepali, Social studies) enriched by instruction in Tibetan language and Himalayan Culture. The courses are taught in English, Nepali and Tibetan. We are making every effort to maintain the highest standard of monastic and educational training according to the teaching of our founder, Shakyamuni Buddha. To achieve this, and to fulfill our commitment, we need your help.
Giving generously to a worthy cause like this, with a good heart and pure motivation does not only help the monks, but also gives you the satisfaction of knowing that you are contributing to the survival of the religious and cultural Himalayan tradition.
Overseas sponsors wholly fund SMSV School. In addition to the education of the children, the school also offers training and employment to more than seven teachers and support staff.
WAYS YOU CAN HELP
Sponsor a Monk Child’s Education
The annual cost of a small monk’s education at the school is 500USD. This includes textbooks, school supplies, clothing, shoes, undergarments, bedding and sanitary provisions. Your contribution will also help to pay for each monk’s room, board and medical care.
Travel Fund
Mustang has extremely cold winters. Therefore, all our students move to Kathmandu during winter time. Each year we must pay the travel expenses to relocate about 110 monks from Lo Manthang to Kathmandu and the way back to Mustang. It costs about 4,200 USD each year.
Our Future Plan : How to help a student after they finish SMSV and Shedra (Buddhist philosophy college) in Mustang
We envision extending our school to Higher Secondary Level. Currently, we offer education to class Eight. Then, students must complete Dhonpa ritual practice (for one year). After four year in our Shedra (Higher Buddhist philosophy studies), the students who wish a further education should move to India. This is expensive for our student monks who struggle to pay tuition and living expenses. We estimate that each student requires $600/year to receive a high standard education. This price includes tuition fees, medical fees, meals, accommodation transportation and textbooks.
Wish List
If we could imagine the best environment for the future of the Himalayan children, we would first start providing them with warm winter clothing and a school designed for the harsh environment of Upper Mustang. Second, we would imagine a green and spacious place where little monks can play. A building that can provide earthquake safety that it runs on bio-fuel and solar power and has space to grow fresh fruit and vegetables.
With the aim to maintain the culture of the Himalayas we teach to the children the traditional dance and music rituals that are performed in Lo Manthang every year. Furthermore we would love to be able to take occasionally our students on pilgrimages to holy sites in Kathmandu Valley and India.
- Warm clothes for the totality of monks: $3000/year
- Mask Dance Fund $800/year
- Pilgrimage picnics Fund $2000/year
The sponsorship contribution helps the monastery to take care of all monks equally and is not directed at a particular monk. In this way the benefits of your generosity will continue as long as the monastery exists, and you are helping the whole community of monks. Every day we have Tara Puja, offers and other special puja in certain moments of the year. The benefactors and sponsors of the monastery will be also added to this dedication.
